Syracuse University Clear Bag Policy and Walkthrough Metal Detectors at the Dome

In an effort to provide a safer environment, a clear bag policy and walkthrough metal detectors are in place at the Dome. These policies significantly expedite fan entry into the Dome. This is consistent with all NFL stadiums and many of Syracuse University’s peer ACC institutions.

Under the policy, each fan is allowed one clear bag and one small clutch or purse. Fans will be asked to return non-approved bags to their vehicle prior to stadium entry. There will be no check-in location for prohibited bags at the Dome.

Syracuse Athletics branded, clear bags are available for purchase at Dome merchandise locations and the Syracuse University Campus Store.

An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection.

Walkthrough metal detectors are in place at all Dome entry gates. Fans will be asked to present cell phones, cameras and other large metal objects to the Event Staff as they approach the front of the line. Fans will not need to remove keys, loose change, wallet, jackets or belts.

CLEAR BAG POLICY – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why did Syracuse University adopt these policies?
Syracuse University—along with many other colleges and universities and professional leagues—is instituting these policies to enhance public safety and make venue access more efficient and secure by limiting the size and style of bags that may be carried into an event venue and adding walkthrough metal detectors.

How do clear bags improve public safety?
The clear bag is easily searched and reduces faulty bag searches. It also supports the Department of Homeland Security’s “If you see something, say something” campaign.

How does it make it more convenient for fans?
This will enable Dome Event Staff to move guests through security checkpoints faster by making it more efficient and effective to check bags that are brought into the venue.

Is this policy only for Syracuse Football games at the Dome?
No. This policy is for all Syracuse Athletic events held at the Dome as well as specified other special events.

How many bags can each person bring into the Dome?
One large clear bag—either a one-gallon Ziploc-style bag or a 12” x 6” x 12” clear PVC vinyl bag—plus a clutch or small purse (4.5” x 6.5”) are permissible. The clutch or purse allows privacy for small personal items and also is easily searched.

Are team-branded bags available to guests?
Syracuse Athletics branded, clear bags are available for purchase at Dome merchandise locations and the Syracuse University Campus Store.

What happens if I show up at the gate with a bag that is not permitted?
Fans with a prohibited bag will not be permitted inside the stadium and will need to return the prohibited bag to their vehicle or transfer their belongings to an approved clear plastic bag before entering the stadium. Syracuse Athletics branded, clear bags are available for purchase at Dome merchandise locations and the Syracuse University Campus Store.

Can fans carry cameras, binoculars, smartphones or tablets separately from what they put in a clear bag?
Yes. Binoculars, a phone, or a camera can be carried into the stadium so long as it is not in its own case. This is not a restriction on items that fans have been able to bring into the Dome, only a restriction on the type of container used to carry items.

Are all purses prohibited?
No. Small clutch purses (4.5” x 6.5”), with or without a handle strap, are permitted along with either a 12” x 6” x 12” clear tote bag or one-gallon Ziploc bag. This should enable you to carry the same items you have in previous years and speed entry into the stadium for all fans as it will take less time to screen bags. We encourage fans not to bring any bags but believe this policy balances fan needs with improved public safety and convenience.

What about diaper bags?
Diaper bags (with child) are permitted. These will be subject to a thorough security inspection and will be tagged at the entry gates. However, a clear bag is strongly recommended for bringing diapers and non-medically necessary items for babies and young children.

If I have certain items that I need to bring into the stadium for medical reasons and they won’t fit in the clear bag, what do I do?
Medically necessary items will be screened and permitted into the stadium.

Do I have to put everything I’m carrying into the permissible bags?
The bag policy is limiting only the type of bags carried into the stadium, not the items that you normally bring to a game. Fans can continue to carry items in their pockets such as keys, phones, wallets, etc.  Please note that all metal objects will need to be removed from your pockets during the screening process.

How can I get through screening quickly?
Guests are strongly encouraged to leave bags and non-essential items home or in their vehicles. Bags and extra items take more time to search and slow down the screening process. Be prepared—have cell phones, key rings, cameras and any large metal objects out of your pockets. Guests do not need to remove jackets, coins, belts, jewelry, watches, etc. Follow these steps, and screening should only take a few seconds.

Are seat cushions and seat back chairs still allowed?
Yes, however they cannot have pockets, zippers or be in their own carrying bag.

WALKTHROUGH METAL DETECTORS – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What if I have a medical device and am not comfortable going through metal detector?
Fans with medical concerns should alert security for alternative screening procedures.

Where do fans with accessibility needs and wheelchairs enter?
Fans with accessibility and/or wheelchairs can enter at the closest accessible gate. Accessible gates are Gates A, C, G, M, N. Event Staff will assist with the screening process.

What happens if the metal detector goes off?
When a metal detector is set off, fans will be asked to step aside for a brief secondary screening.

How can I get through the metal detector quickly?
Fans should limit the number of items that are brought to the game to minimize search times. Always follow the instructions of Event Staff working at the gates. Have all cell phones, cameras and large metal objects out and ready for inspection prior to getting to the front of the line. As always, plan to arrive early for the game to ensure easy entry into the Dome.

Do I need to remove my belt and jacket?
Fans do not need to remove belts and jackets. All keys, loose change and wallets can remain in your pockets as you move through the metal detector.
