In 2011, the Brisbane Lions first identified a need to relocate our training and administration base from The Gabba and developed a proposal to build a new home at Springfield, a 35-minute drive from the Brisbane CBD.
Our Club came to this decision due to regular disruption of the football department during the pre-season. With no summer access to The Gabba due to the cricket season, our team would train at multiple bases across Brisbane. This instability affected athlete preparation and was logistically difficult for staff moving training equipment from venue to venue.
As the professionalism of football increased the training facilities at The Gabba reached full capacity, with 45 plus men training with the AFL side, alongside the Lions Academy which has grown larger each year.
The introduction of the AFL Women’s competition in 2016 saw our Club bursting at the seams and it quickly became apparent that our women’s team was in desperate need of a training space and a summer home venue.
Construction commenced in 2020, and in early 2021 the Lions announced a naming rights partnership to brand the precinct as Brighton Homes Arena.
October 17 was the date the Brisbane Lions moved into their new purpose-built training and admin facility, Brighton Homes Arena. Home to:
- Michael Voss Oval - home ground for our Premiership-winning AFLW team and VFL team.
