Since introducing the first Amateur Night contests in 1934, The Apollo has played a major role in the emergence of R&B, jazz, swing, bebop, gospel, blues, and soul — all quintessential American music genres. From Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Luther Vandross to contemporaries like H.E.R, D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill, Jazmine Sullivan and PJ Morton -  countless artists began their road to stardom on The Apollo's stages. Today, The Apollo is a world-renowned nonprofit presenting concerts, theatrical and dance performances, film screenings, educational programs, and community outreach programs.
